Admission Requirements

The online Nurse-Midwifery Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B. Sc.) program caters to busy nurses, allowing them to pursue their career aspirations at their convenience. Whether you're a full-time professional or have other commitments, our flexible scheduling options ensure you can earn your graduate degree without interrupting your current job. Choose between full-time or part-time enrollment to accommodate your schedule effectively.

The Nurse-Midwifery B. Sc. program accepts new students three times annually and usually maintains a cohort size of 100-120 students, ensuring ample opportunities for individualized interaction with faculty members.


Currently, the online graduate nursing programs offered by the Lumina Open University are available to students residing in Nigeria. Please note that state restrictions may change over time. We advise you to reach out to the relevant state licensing agency in your current state or the state where you plan to practice to obtain the latest information on state licensure prerequisites before enrolling in the program.

Applicants undergo an admission review process that considers their potential to thrive in graduate studies, along with the criteria outlined below.


Prerequisites

  • An actively maintained and unencumbered Registered Nurse license in Nigeria.
  • A National Diploma in Nursing /Midwifery awarded by an institution accredited by National Council of Nurses/Midwifery.
  • An overall minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the National Diploma of Science in Nursing program is advised.
  • Successful completion of an industrial attachment
  • A Science GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale.
  • At least one year of experience as a Registered Nurse in Nigeria, preferably in labor and delivery.

Application

Applicants for the online Bachelor of Science in Nursing and online program utilize Jamb admission or LOU Application platform for submission.

Register an account with Jamb, where searching for "Lumina" will prominently display The Lumina Open University. Continue scrolling to locate the Nurse Midwifery (B. Sc.) program, then click on the "+" symbol to commence the application process. Upon completing this application, you'll be required to furnish identical information for the LOU application.

Helpful Tips:

  • You have the option to edit the application before final submission.
  • You have the option to pay and submit your application while awaiting transcripts and reference letters.
  • Complete coursework entry is mandatory for the application.

Transcripts

Official transcripts from all institutions attended must be sent directly to Lumina Open University.

International transcripts must undergo evaluation by Federal Ministry of Education Evaluation Department. Result of the evaluations should be sent directly to Lumina Open University.


Minimum GPA

A minimum Diploma GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is required. Comparable achievement levels are expected for other grading systems.

If your GPA or science GPA falls below the desired level, you'll need to put in extra effort to make the rest of your application stand out to the committee.


References

Three letters of reference

References should be provided by individuals who can verify your academic and professional abilities. Reference letters should ideally come from educators, managers, supervising physicians, or Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) in the relevant specialty. Peer references are discouraged.


Goal Statement

A personal goal statement with a length of 500-750 words, encompassing:

  • Motivation for embarking on a career in the B.SC specialty you're applying for
  • Attributes you possess that would contribute to your effectiveness as a practitioner in the specialty you are applying for
  • Particular actions you've taken to ready yourself for enrollment in an BSN program specializing in this field

Your goal statement is also assessed as a writing sample and should be composed at the graduate essay level.


Resume

Professional resume required.

Illustrate your dedication to Midwifery by showcasing leadership positions, involvement in committees, volunteer work, participation in professional organizations, and attainment of special certifications. While experience in labor and delivery is highly valued, other relevant work experiences will also be taken into account.

The review committee aims to ascertain that you are advancing professionally beyond the obligations of your current role. Dedicate time to thoroughly update your resume with the aforementioned elements to distinguish yourself from other applicants.

Restrictions

International Student Restrictions

  • An international student is classified as an individual who possesses citizenship in a country other than the Nigeria and is not a permanent resident of Nigeria.
  • Our online programs welcome international students, on the condition that they agree to fulfill their clinical requirements within Nigeria.
  • Because of the clinical obligations in our graduate online programs, international students must either possess a visa granting them legal authorization to work within Nigeria or be capable of obtaining such legal status to participate in clinical activities in Nigeria
  • Online programs, including clinical requirements, do not qualify international students for student visas.
  • International students are required to possess the necessary work authorization documents or be capable of obtaining them before applying to online programs in the Faculty of Allied Health Science at the Lumina Open University.

Clinical Restrictions

  • We are unable to accept residents of Nigeria Territories or individuals residing outside of Nigeria. Only military personnel residing on a military base and capable of fulfilling clinical requirements on the base should consider applying to our Lumina Open University graduate online programs. Prospective students must confirm their ability to fulfill clinical requirements on the military base before applying to our program.
  • Students are not permitted to fulfill clinical requirements at Nigeria Embassy.

Required Certifications and Training for Nurse-Midwifery

Effective 2024, registered and certified nurse midwives and national diploma nursing sciences will be mandadted for admmission into bachelor's degree and successfully complete the certification exam administered by the National Councils of Nurses and Midwifery. The LOU Online degree in nurse midwifery is specifically crafted to address subjects pertinent to nurse midwife careers and to equip graduates for success in their certification exam.

Certified Nurse Midwives are authorized healthcare professionals with prescriptive authority in all 36 states. Online education and healthcare practitioner regulations vary by state. Before enrolling in LOU Online, potential students are advised to consult our state-by-state overview and reach out to the appropriate regulatory board in their state of residence.

After obtaining certification, nurse midwives are required to uphold their certification every five years. This involves completing certification training modules, participating in continuing education courses, and fulfilling annual fees. Alternatively, they have the option to undergo recertification by retaking the certification exam and paying a five-year cumulative fee to sustain their certification.
